Eden Gourmet - The Cafe
South Orange
What about Candied Kumquats?
Here's what I think about going food shopping. Before I go, I think of it as a chore, something that has to be done, and that I'd much rather be lunching with a friend. And then I think about going to Eden Gourmet in South Orange where I can shop and have lunch with a friend.
There are so many new and interesting items to try there, yet sometimes I'm not sure how to prepare them or what they'll really taste like. Enter The Cafe located upstairs of the Marketplace and you'll get a chance to sample the delicious items downstairs prepared in a way to showcase those ingredients.
Right now, the menu inside this Italian bistro includes pizza, pasta and salads. We tried the wild mushroom pizza with walnut pesto that was decadent and delicious. There's a broccoli rabe & roasted chicken pizza with peppadew peppers. And a duck pizza with morbier cheese and fig jam. All those ingredients (many I've never heard of, let alone tried, but they all sound amazing) are available downstairs should you want to re-create these delicious dishes.
The pasta dishes and salad choices are abundant. The pappardelle pasta with roasted chicken was super fresh and surprisingly light. The tri-colore salad includes candied kumquats and pistachios. And you can create your own salads using fresh and appetizing ingredients like grape tomatoes and goat cheese or go for the more exotic choices like grilled fennel, white anchovies, roasted shrimp and roasted mushrooms. The dressings vary from an aged sherry to a roasted shallot.
The Cafe is only the beginning of an expansion of dining opportunities at Eden Gourmet. A full service restaurant, outdoor dining and private space are all in the works.
It's been said to not go food shopping when you're hungry. We disagree. Especially at Eden Gourmet. Meet a friend for lunch, get inspired about a new dish, and then shop for that homemade meal on your way out. Inspiration and convenience is definitely suburbuzz-worthy.
